Sahraa Karimi joins Stockholm International Film Festival

The only woman in Afghanistan to hold a PhD in film, director Sahraa Karimi was appointed the first female Head of the Afghan National Film Organisation in 2019. After the Taliban took siege of Afghanistan, Karimi fled her home country in August 2021 and her title was handed over to a man. The Taliban siege has been a matter of great concern, especially for women and workers in the culture industry. Karimi has been at the forefront of advocating for human rights and freedom of expression in Afghanistan, discussing important topics such as abortion and female perspectives in her films.

Joining the panel, we have a lineup of inspiring women who all have their own connection to the situation in Afghanistan.

Moderated by Journalist and Author Åsne Seierstad.

This Panel is made possible thanks to the Swedish Institute.
